This course introduces the key concepts in business strategy. We will first explore how the broad macro-level environment impacts a firm's operations. Next we will narrow down to examine dynamics within a particular industry - examining why certain industry structures tend to be more profitable than others. Having introduced how firms are impacted by factors external to them, the remainder of the course will focus on how strategic decisions within the organization influence firm profitability.
Assessment of the class will comprise three components:
- Quizzes distributed over the course of the 7-weeks to assess continued learning
- A group report and presentation, covering the taught material
- Overall attendance and participation
